About the Society

Home

Unlike many canal societies, the Southampton Canal Society does not support a single waterway. There is no Southampton Canal, although in the past there were several navigable waterways in southern Hampshire (see Local Waterways). Instead our aims are to foster interest in canals and inland waterways, to assist in their preservation, restoration and development, and to give practical help on waterway projects.

Established in June 1967, the Society regularly holds meetings, usually on the first Thursday of each month (see Society Meetings). In 40 years, not a single monthly meeting has been missed - come rain or shine.

The Society, through its regular meetings of illustrated talks and canal outings, helps many waterways and associated organisations with donations and assistance with working parties. As an affiliated member of the Inland Waterways Association (a national body that campaigns for all waterways users), the Society supports the restoration of derelict waterways along with the preservation of our waterways heritage and transport system.

The Society produces a monthly A4 newsletter that is distributed at meetings and sent to members. It is also available on this website (see Newsletter).

Annual subscriptions to the Society are currently £15.00 for single membership and £22.00 for a family. However, before committing yourself, why not come to one of our meetings - non-members are welcome with no admission charges (except for special events).
